Stringing recommendation
String Tension
The correct string tension has a huge impact on your game—it determines control, power, spin, and comfort. Therefore, it's important to adjust the stringing to your playing style, your racket, and the conditions. It is only possible to recommend a string tension if we know the following parameters: frame stiffness, racket head size, string pattern (e.g., 16/19), string model, string diameter, and, above all, your playing style. For this reason, we only provide maximum values here as a very rough guide.
Maximum string tension according to racket head size
| Head size | Area (cm²) | Co-Poly 1.23 mm | Nylon 1.30 mm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midsize | 548–630 | 24 / 23 kg | 26 / 25 kg |
| Midplus | 630–677 | 26 / 25 kg | 28 / 27 kg |
| Oversize | 678–741 | 27 / 26 kg | 29 / 28 kg |
| Super Oversize | 742+ | 28 / 27 kg | 30 / 29 kg |
Additional tips on string tension
- Yonex & elongated frames: Cross stringing approx. 1 kg softer – increases spin.
- Round frames (e.g. Prince): same tension lengthwise & crosswise for better control.
- Very stiff racket / string pattern 18x20: 1-2 kg less stringing for more comfort.
- Thin strings (e.g. 1.18 mm): String 1–2 kg tighter for better control.
Practical tip
Ambitious players vary the tension depending on:
- Surface (clay court, hard court, indoor)
- Temperature & Humidity
- Altitude (e.g. mountainous areas vs. coast)
- Opponent type (a lot of spin? high speed?)
MSV tip: Use a tension meter like the MSV Mini STT to check your stringing regularly and maintain a consistent playing feel.
Popular tension (Focus Hex 1.23 mm)
| Attitude | distribution |
|---|---|
| 25 / 24–26 kg | 26% |
| 24 / 23–25 kg | 25% |
| 26 / 25–27 kg | 24% |
| 27 / 26–30 kg | 8% |
