Re-stringing

Stringing Check: When & why you should restring

Even if a string appears to be intact on the outside, its playing characteristics change over time. Therefore, it's worth checking regularly whether your stringing still suits your playing style.

Why is regular stringing so important?

  • The stringing accounts for over 50% of the playing characteristics of your racket.
  • Over time, every string loses tension, elasticity and control .
  • An old or dead string can cause arm problems – especially with co-polyester strings.

How often should you restring?

The rule of thumb is: as often per year as you play per week.

Frequency of play Recommended interval
1× per month every 4–6 months
1× per week every 2–4 months
3–4 times per week every 2–4 weeks (or if ruptured)

Checklist: Time for new stringing?

Answer these questions with yes or no:

  • Does your string seem inelastic or “dead”?
  • Do you feel more vibration or pain in your arm?
  • The main strings keep slipping?
  • Is the sound when you make contact with the ball muffled or unusual?
  • Do you have less control or spin?
  • Is the string visibly damaged or frayed?

If you can answer several questions with “yes,” it’s time for new stringing.

MSV tip for ambitious players

If you play regularly or compete in tournaments, we recommend checking your strings with a string gauge like the MSV Mini STT . This will allow you to detect tension loss early on and protect your arm from overload.
